Black Sabbath-Dio Era

I recently received the box set of Black Sabbath-Rules Of Hell from a friend. What an uplifting, brighten your day title, right! On a lark I started to listen to it and the damn thing actually rocks and brings back memories of my life as a 7th-8th grader. Mob Rules, remember that cool looking concert shirt? Heaven & Hell-first time I heard this was on my way to driver's ed in a carpool with Ronnie Moore. Wow! Ronnie James Dio and nothing further needs to be said!

American Idol-David Archuleta

I just saw one performance tonight on American Idol and it was the very last one...David Archuleta. He sang "Imagine" by John Lennon and totally nailed it and more. It was better than the original in some regards. This kid barely even puts effort into his singing and it is incredible! I am not a regular "Idol" watcher, but there cannot be a better performance than what he just gave in "Idol's" history so far. I just hope he did not peak too soon on this competition.

Van Halen Tears Up Dallas, Texas Saturday Night 1/26/2008

I just got back from the Van Halen concert tonight in Dallas, Texas. I knew it would be good, but I cannot believe how much better it turned out to be. Eddie is absolutely determined to erase the 2004 memories of himself and he killed! Wolfgang still has the acne and Nintendo/Cheetos baby fat thing going, but he knows how to play the bass and even some drums. What kid would kill to have his gig at 16 years old??? It was actually Eddie's 53rd birthday tonight and Dave led the crowd in a sing along "Happy Birthday" early in the show. If you know Eddie's recent past, then every birthday is a small miracle in itself. Of course, he still lit up a couple of cigs to keep it real. What a great trip down memory lane and and let's hope these guys are staying motivated to create some 21st century old school Van Halen music next year.

Van Halen Tickets Have Arrived!!!

Well, my tickets to Van Halen (Dallas, January 26th) arrived today. I scored a heck of a deal on ebaY with these. I have not gone to a rock concert in about 5-6 years. When I was younger, I went to them on a weekly basis. Of course, it's why my hearing was damaged and I have to say huh? more these days. A hearing aid will be forthcoming in the future. Growing older sucks (I am 39!). Anyways, my love of old school Van Halen goes all the way back to 7th grade when I first heard Fair Warning. From that point on, they were my band. The Sammy era never quite did it for me. My wife has always heard me say that Dave and Eddie would somehow, someway and someday reunite and tour once more. She would invariably roll her eyes at me and laugh. Well, look who's laughing now. I am posting some disturbing pictures of Eddie from 2006 at some weird Hollywood party. He was definitely on the pipe and not right. Now, a little over a year later he looks ten years younger and healthy as an ox. Let's hope he stays that way. At some point we all must grown older with grace, right!

Dallas Cowboys & Patrick Crayton Have Got To Be Sick!!!

What an inexcusable loss to the NY Giants today. Big mouth Patrick Crayton cannot make the sealing play of the game when Jedi Tony Romo lays a perfect pass in his hands and...he drops it. Go up by 10 but instead, they are down by 4 in a matter of minutes. Next time, shut up Patrick and act like what you are...a third receiver who started this year because of Terry Glenn's injury. Quit going on ESPN Radio and acting like you have some skins on the wall. You are becoming the next Freddie Mitchell, remember him? Well, let's keep it in perspective. Be thankful for your family, health and anything else in life that you have going for you. But right now, it sucks to be a Dallas Cowboys fan.

What is the Brown Sound???

I am already being asked what the heck brown sound is. No, you cannot smell it before you hear it. Here is a full summation of what the brown sound actually is. If you are a die hard Van Halen fan, then you already know:

The Brown Sound is a legendary electric guitar distortion tone that musicians try to emulate using various effects pedals, tube amplifiers and modeling amplifiers. The term was coined by guitarist Eddie Van Halen to describe the sound of Alex Van Halen's snare drum, which he then attempted to emulate with his 100-watt Marshall amplifier running at full volume. Eddie would use a variac (a device that controls voltage levels) and run it at about 90 volts ac to the power input of the Marshall amp (normally the amp would have 120 volts input in the US; although the older Marshalls like Eddie's were designed in Europe with a 110 volt input rating)this allowed Eddie to lower the voltage input to his Marshall while allowing him to turn the amplifier's volume knob up all the way, this saturated the output tubes, without distorting the preamp tubes, and lowered the stress on the amplifier. Eddie would also use a dummy load on the amp output instead of going right to the speakers, then he would add his effects pedals (Eddie found the effects performed better this way) and then run the effects into a power amp usually an H&H V800 MOS-FET, then to speakers. He would set his Marshall Amp output resistance at 8 ohms and the dummy load at 20 ohms lowering the stress on the Marshall amp (the Marshall amp basically became one powerful preamp). This all helped to create his brown sound in conjunction with the single PAF pick-up and a high resistance volume pot he installed, without a tone control. Of course this was mainly his recording set-up; Eddies live setup was a little different. More than the appropriate number of user-submitted product reviews at the well known musician review websites claim that product X can replicate the Brown Sound perfectly.
Sources of the brown sound are frequently speculated upon, from the pickup Van Halen used on his "frankenstrat" guitar, possible modifications to the amplifier for more preamp gain, additional distortion from the phase 90 pedal, or simply studio trickery. However; Eddie admitted years later that the amp modification story was made up by him to increase his buddies repair business. No real modifications were done to his Marshall amp except once in a while Eddie would use a different rated output tube(s) that would saturate faster. Eddie applied the variac, dummy load, and power amp, along with his modifications to the guitar, and a few effects to get his Brown Sound. It should be noted that older Marshall Amps had a distinct sound to begin with and most guitarist used a lot of treble in the sound where Eddie did not.

Texas Tech Red Raiders Hire Phil Bennett

I graduated from Texas Tech in 1991 and follow the athletic/football program closely. Yesterday, they beat Virginia in the Gator Bowl. They were behind 14 points in the 4th quarter and somehow managed to win on a field goal with two seconds remaining 31-28. Mike Leach-Head Coach has always run an explosive and cartoonish offense but has absolutely no regard for his own teams' defense. They cannot protect any lead and will let inferior offensive talent dominate their defense at the line. They cannot tackle or make a stop whenever needed. Their defense cost them at least two games this year against Oklahoma State and Colorado. I begged Mike Leach via email to hire Phil Bennett as his defensive coordinator next year to replace their current "interim" defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeil. Please, heed my call to hire a professional defensive minded coach to run a defense in Lubbock, Texas next year!!! I'm just a fan, but one who cares!
